TV Tower and ilness… 26-27. Dec 2016

26. December

Coffee, scrambled eggs, potato salad, some cucumber

 Napoleon’s cake and coffee

Bouillabaisse @ Teletorn Restaurant. I’ve never had bouillabaisse before, but I always thought it was a seafood stew soup with more seafood in it. It was still good, but not what I expected. The piece of crab on top of it was really good.

Sous vide roasted saddle of lamb, deep-fried thymus, vegetable gratin, baby vegetables and rosemary sauce. The roasted thymus had a very weird texture xD

 Daim McFlurry

We visited the Estonian TV Tower in the evening and had dinner in their restaurant. The view from 175m to the evening Tallinn was beautiful. The restaurant meal was probably one of the most expensive meals I’ve ever had and it all was… okay. I mean, the food was good, but nothing special. I always think that if after a meal, I can only think how good everything was, the meal was probably worth the money, but if afterwards I can only think how expensive everything was, then the food probably wasn’t worth the price. So, I doubt I ever want to go back to that restaurant. It was however still an interesting experience.

27. December

Oat bran porridge with butter and raspberry jam, kefir bread with chocolate spread, coffee

Pork schnitzels, fried potatoes with eggs, some cucumber and avocado salad

I caught a cold. Probably caught the bug from my boyfriend who started showing symptoms of illness already during Yule. Ugh, sucks so much.

Yule celebrations and drunk people being idiots… 24-25. Dec 2016

24. December

 Coffee and porridge

Yule dinner: blood sausages, pork schnitzels, boiled potatoes with cream sauce, sauerkraut, meat rolls

 Coffee and delicious delicious cake

Yule celebrations were fun this year. During the day, we helped to decorate the party rooms and I decorated a whole bunch of gingerbread cookies. In the evening, there was a huge feast and then Jõuluvana came and brought everyone gifts. Jõuluvana was awesome, he had an actual long white beard and awesome boots 😀

Sadly, the very end of the evening turned sour for me, as I got upset at some drunk people acting very rudely and then drunk people driving. Unbelievable! Apparently drunk driving is very common with some people in that part of Estonia. I ended up having words with some of them in the middle of the night, but it was no use, as they sat behind the wheel anyway. In hindsight, I should have just confiscated their car keys, but I was too sleepy back then to come up with that idea.

25. December

 Potato salad and coffee

 More of this amazing cake

Berry jelly with ice cream. The family we were visiting has an interesting Yule tradition to always make jelly as a dessert.

Berry gummies that smelled bad and tasted awful. No one in the car wanted to eat them.

A ham and eggs baguette from a gas station

I didn’t sleep too well, because the room was too hot, plus I was super upset over the drunk drivers. I was in a pissy mood the entire day and had real trouble holding myself back so I wouldn’t start picking fights with people over the drunken driving. I kind of felt that they’d just laugh in my face and make me feel even more crap, because of my inability to hold a proper debate. I always end up babbling and forgetting what I want to say, so it wouldn’t have been any use anyway.

We got back to Tallinn very late at night, because people kept stalling our departure with random crap like going to the sauna in the middle of the day etc. I was annoyed to say the least, but eventually we got back home and gosh, there is no place like home. I think I calmed down instantly when I stepped through the door and then had the best sleep ever in my own bed.

Mochi disappointment and confusing railway systems… 22-23. Dec 2016

22. December

Polar bread with butter and ham

Chicken kimchi stew with some rice

 A tangerine

We had dinner in Tokumaru in the evening with my boyfriend’s friends and their little baby. I had an avocado-salmon rice bowl that was absolutely delicious.

Shared these tempura king prawns with the boyfriend.

Aaaaand the dessert that ruined my mood in a colossal way: matcha and mochi. I was just incredibly disappointed in this. The matcha was good, but the mochi… when I first read that they were offering mochi in their menu, I naturally assumed that it would be mochi made in the restaurant. I was so excited! Finally, a Japanese restaurant is having proper Japanese desserts in their menu! But instead I was offered one of these yucky tasting boxed mochi’s instead D: I don’t think my expectations were unrealistic. I mean, who in their right mind would expect to be served prefabricates that you can buy in a grocery store in a fancy restaurant? I don’t like the way the boxed mochi tastes and I think it’s because of all the additives and preservatives that make it last several years in the box. I felt cheated and the taste of that mochi ruined the aftertaste of all the good things I had eaten before. BAH! I could have gotten an entire box of these crappy things for the money they charged for this too.

Coffee, peanut butter brownie and cheesecake with raspberries and blueberries

23. December

Polar bread with ham and oat bran porridge with butter

Tea and rye bread with butter and cucumber

Boiled potatoes with minced meat sauce, some marinated cucumber and boiled beetroot

We took the train to go and visit my boyfriend’s family for Yule. I kind of feel that this took the entire day, as the train ride took almost 4 hours + the car ride after that. Estonian train system is a bit funky. We bought the tickets early, because we figured that more people would be using the trains near the holidays. Big was our surprise that the ticket didn’t actually guarantee us a seat, instead the seats were given out by first come first serve basis. I was pretty annoyed, because I feel that I am far too old to spend 3 hours sitting on the train floor. What’s the use of buying the tickets early then at all? We were not the only people upset over the matter, I heard quite many people grumbling about this. Thankfully I noticed some younger women who had conveniently occupied their neighbouring seats with their bags and since they weren’t reserving the seats for someone else, I kindly asked them to remove their stuff, so we could sit down.

Then there was the issue that we almost got off at the wrong stop, because we thought we had to switch trains. Which apparently we didn’t 😀 The confusion came from the fact that when my boyfriend made the reservations, he was given two separate tickets: one from Tallinn to Tartu on train (let’s say) number 336 (I don’t remember the actual numbers) and then from Tartu to Sangaste on train 17. One would assume then that had to switch trains in Tartu, but apparently, the train conveniently changed its number in the Tartu region. How were we supposed to know something like that? It didn’t display this info anywhere in the train as far as we could see. There was no information about any of this, nor did I hear an announcement. Thankfully we panicked when we got off the train in Tartu, because there was no other train to get on to, so we jumped back on the train and managed to find conductor, who looked at us funny and told us that we were in fact on the correct train and no transfer was necessary. Had we been a few seconds too late with getting back on the train we would have been stranded in Tartu and that would have been a hassle. Honestly, Elron, your train systems suck salty bull balls. EUGH!

Later, when we finally reached our destination, people laughed at us for not knowing that we wouldn’t have reserved seats and that were on the correct train, but they use the train all the time whilst for me it was only the third time ever to use the (new) train in Estonia and the previous times I bought a first class ticket that did reserve me a seat and only ever went until Tartu, so couldn’t have known about the number changes. I kind of figured that the regular ticket class would still reserve me a seat like when I buy a ticket for a bus ride, I just wouldn’t have that much comfy space as they have in first class.

Well this concludes my misadventures in Estonia-land for today.

Cool things I found while wasting time online #25

This is a post of interesting things I’ve found online (and sometimes offline). These things may include among others: recipes, fandom stuff, interesting articles or artwork. I tried doing this post weekly, but sometimes I was too busy to surf the web or simply didn’t find anything noteworthy the entire week, so now I will post this whenever I finally have something to share 😛

  • SHAME! If you happen to be a “Game of Thrones” TV series fan, you’ll love this 😀
  • Hahaha, I need this “Twin Peaks” lego set in my life xD
  • WOOOO I squealed so hard when I watched the first “Spider-Man: Homecoming” trailer 😀 The new Spidey is so perfectly awkward and chatty. I love it. And I am also really happy that they included Tony Stark in this 😀 I can’t wait for this movie, honestly!
  • I don’t believe in photoshopping your food and/or using tricks like described in the below video when you are a food blogger. I guess it’s fine in commercial movies and such, but it feels like blasphemy when people do it to illustrate their recipes etc. I mean, it’s fine to lighten up photos or photoshop away a stray cat hair you didn’t notice on your food when taking a photo. But taking photos when the dish is half-cooked or modifying it some other way, like they do in the video, or blatantly just photoshopping the dish to look beautifully unrealistic feels so wrong. I mean, I feel as bad when my dish doesn’t look as pretty as on the recipe photos as I feel bad when I don’t feel as pretty as all the obviously photoshopped models in fashion magazines. Well, at least this is why I personally don’t photoshop my food or why I don’t mess with it unnaturally to make it look prettier.  It’s still cool though what tricks people have developed to make food look oh so very beautiful.
  • A very fangirl Christmas song 😀

Drop me a line or two if you liked or found anything interesting in my choices as well 😀

Friends… 20-21. Dec 2016

20. December

A slice of mushroom and ham quiche and a cup of coffee @ Gustav Café. The quiche was not good at all, I only ate half of it. It had too much seasoning which made it very unpleasant to eat.

Maarja

Chicken curry @ Little India. Very good stuff for a lunch  menu offering. Yum!

 Potato paratha

 Ham sandwich and coffee

Pelmeni with sour cream and some kimchi

 Tea and a rum pastry

Shopping is hard. I spent the day with Maarja, walking around in a local super market and trying to find myself a new coat or something else to wear outside, because my only jacket was falling apart. According to my pedometer I walked 22km that day; also, I got a blister under my foot, I lost my lip piercing, a button from my old coat and broke two nails xD At least the company was good ♥ and I eventually did find a suitable parka to wear… at the very last store I went to xD

21. December

A couple of rum pastries and a cup of coffee

Glass noodles with wakame and sour cream

I had a beer and some deep fried potato peels with Anna ♥

Chicken kimchi stew with some rice

I spent the day running errands and organising Yule presents. In the evening I met up with Anna for a few hours to grab a beer and to catch up. Was lovely!

I’m terrible when I am tired… 18-19. Dec 2016

18. December

Coffee, a boiled egg and several minced meat pastries

A cappuccino and I had a couple of bites of the cheesecake

Buckwheat-cabbage stew, fried blood pudding and cucumber salad with sour cream.

I didn’t sleep well the night before, so I was moody and tired for most of the day. We drove back from Pärnu and went to Tondiraba ice-rink, because my brother had his ice-skating group Christmas party/show there. I was a bad big sister and decided to nap in the café instead of watching my little brother dance on ice. I took a proper long nap when we finally got back home… I felt so much better after that. I’m not a very nice person when I am tired.

19. December

Cereal with milk and a cup of coffee

 Buckwheat-cabbage stew

Coffee and a few banana muffins

Salmon sandwiches and a vermouth (?) cocktail

Had one slice of veggie quiche

In the evening, we went to visit our friends Mati and Merle to pick up my cake mould I forgot there the last time we visited. It was originally supposed to be a quick visit, but we ended up staying for hours and just chatting in their kitchen. Was quite lovely.
