[what I ate.] 22-28. October 2018

22. October – Venom

A banana.

Some vitamin water and a doughnut after working out. I took the second doughnut to Kerttu at her work place.

Coffee with my love in my favourite café The Living Room Café.

Popcorn. We went to see “Venom.” While not a perfect movie, it was still really fun and enjoyable. Not sure why most of the internet seems to be complaining over it. I had a blast and wouldn’t mind watching it again.

Salmon soup at my parent’s house.

Some cookies and tea.

23. October – from Tallinn to Girona

An almond pastry.

Quite crappy pelmeni with sour cream. The pelmeni were flavourless. I hadn’t bought this brand before, so it was a disappointment.

A grilled sandwich with cheese and sausage.

A latte and a chocolate croissant at KOHVer Café. Both were mediocre. I was disappointed, because I had over the top good memories of this place from the last time I was at the airport. No exquisite latte this time 😦 I mean it wasn’t bad, it was alright as far most coffee drinks go in Estonia, just I was hoping for a repeat wonderful experience.

Coffee on the plane. This was something new for me. They prepared this coffee by pouring hot water over fresh grounds in the cup. I mean I have made coffee like that at home many a time, but never have I seen such coffee being served in an establishment and with specialized disposable cups like these. Interesting and the coffee was good.

Some bread and ham late at night.

24. October

Fried eggs and bacon, some tomato, toast with cream cheese and ham. Coffee, a walnut-cereal yoghurt.

Coffee and a banana with a magnificent view. The kind of bananas I ate in Catalonia tasted different from the ones we usually can buy at home. I loved the flavour a lot and I hope I can find similar ones in Estonia too. Perhaps I should try to look in some organic food stores.

Pasta carbonara for dinner. There was also salad and baked chicken-vegetable skewers. I only remembered to take a photo midway dinner xD

Beer and ice cream.

25. October

An omelette and pa amb tomata which is a traditional Catalan breakfast staple. Basically it’s “bread with tomato” xD First you rub the toast with garlic, then with tomato and then pour some olive oil on top. Quite a tasty breakfast 😀

Some yoghurt, orange juice, coffee and cake.

Some orange and tomatoes, toast with hazelnut-milk spread and a cup of coffee.

Some cookies, brioche and a lemon muffin.

Beer.

Roast chicken with onions, plums, garlic and cinnamon, with a side of some salad and garlicy potatoes. Apparently, this type of meat dish is a typical Catalan Christmas food, but it was made for us as a special occasion 🙂 It was extremely delicious!

Yumyum!

A French style apple pie for dessert.

26. October

Orange juice, yoghurt, coffee, pa amb tomata, fried eggs, bacon.

A cappuccino and some complimentary olives. I almost never eat olives in Estonia, because most of the ones sold here taste gross. These were quite lovely tasting!

Bread and anchovies. I am not too sure about the anchovies, they weren’t bad, but I can’t say that I particularly liked them either.

Snails in spicy sauce. These were yummy!

Beer and a banana.

Vegetable puree soup with croutons and some funky French bread other guests from France shared with us.

Salad, some fried sausages (a bit too salty for my likes) and a macaroni dish with pork ribs that was oh so delicious.

Nice chocolate cake with crappy canned whipped cream.

27. October – going back to Estonia

Coconut yoghurt, coffee, omelette, bacon, pa amb tomata.

Some orange juice and chocolate chip cake.

A sugar doughnut and some coffee.

Roasted giant corn. So yummy!

Some potato chips and a cappuccino on the plane. I like the text on the cup: “Please attend to your own cappuccino before attempting to steal your neighbour’s” xD A funny twist on the airplane safety tips xD

Chicken tikka masala. It looked and smelled awful but tasted alright.

28. October

Coffee, chocolate chip bread.

Buckwheat with beef liver, sour cream and some salad.

Pocari Sweat. Good hydrating drink :p

[what I ate.] 3 – 9. September 2018

3. September

Porridge with strawberry jam.

Handmade chocolates that I got from the Uue Maailma street festival. One was apple-cinnamon and the other coconut. I didn’t fancy the apple-cinnamon very much. The coconut one was good, albeit a bit dry.

Smoked chicken-konnyaku noodle wok with veggies.

4. September

Vegetable soup and rye bread with butter.

Rice with smoked chicken, vegetables and sour cream. Also had some pickles.

A slice of almond flour banana-chocolate cake.

5. September

A marzipan roll and coffee.

Salmon pasta.

Rye bread with butter and salmon pasta mixed with leftover rice from last night.

Ruby cocoa Kit Kat I shared with husband.

6. September

Different roasted beans. A nice snack.

Pumpkin soup with sour cream and pumpkin seeds.

A cheese roll.

White tea with raspberry, apple and lemon.

Spicy and sour soup with quinoa, mushrooms and sour cream. Also had two more cheese rolls.

Coffee, kabosu shortbread cookie and white chocolate-puffed rice-grape snack I shared with hubby. The kabosu, which is a type of citrus fruit, cookie was yummy, but the grape snack tasted horrible to me, so hubby ate it all. I really do not enjoy the red grape flavour in snacks.

Look how cute the kabosu cookie looked.

7. September

Green pea-cauliflower soup with seeds.

A smoothie bowl made from a banana, kiwi fruit, spinach and coconut milk. Topped with more banana, some pomegranate seeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds.

Sour and spicy soup with quinoa, mushrooms and sour cream. Also had a cheese pastry and some onion-turmeric bread.

8. September – a literature street festival

Coffee and a coconut-banana pastry.

Goat milk chocolate ice cream.

Fish and chips.

Flatbread with edamame hummus and wasabi sprouts; couscous salad.

Plum gummies.

I spent most of the day with Kadi at a literature festival in Kadriorg. It was a super good time and I got some nice books. We also went to a gourmet market at a nearby grocery store where I got the sprouts and edamame hummus. A day well spent.

9. September

Leftover couscous salad and a couple of fried eggs.

Ham and boletus pasta and some soup.

Some figs in chocolate and a half of this Kinder Bueno chocolate.

My good day out with a friend yesterday was followed by me falling ill D:

I lost some days… 31. May 2018

Orange flavoured Greek yoghurt with granola.

Coconut milk soup with champignons and rice noodles; oven baked potatoes and tomatoes with some salad.

Some black currant-estragon kombucha and a sugar-cinnamon cookie.

Couscous salad.

Green grape flavoured chewy candies. These were not as bad tasting as purple grape ones, but I still didn’t enjoy them very much.

Vegan rocky road ice cream.

Noms in Stavanger day 3… 1. December 2017

Some traditional Norwegian treat- lefse flatbread with butter and cinnamon. It was really nice. Also, had some porridge with nuts and berries in dark chocolate.

A green smoothie and a ham sandwich

Wanted by Diplom-Is Billybob “Butternutter” Pecan- cream ice cream with caramel sauce and caramelized pecans. It was yummy.

We made Japanese style curry with fried sausage xD Like all Estonians, the curry was served with some sour cream :p We also drank some Kriek de Ranke.

Work… 13. September 2017

 Coffee and two quark pastries

 Grapes

Beetroot latte. This was really yummy and the pinkness of the drink made me all cheery.

Boiled potatoes with pork sauce and some salad

 Cheese pastry

Last night’s spicy soup turned into something with rice 😀 It was still good. Also had a slice of rye bread with butter.

Töö ja jaanid… 22-23. June 2017

22. June

NuGo FIBER d’LISH peanut chocolate chip energy bar and some coffee. The energy bar was okay, but not one of my faves.

 A cheese roll

Oatmeal porridge by cinnamon and honey

Custard flavoured Choco Aanpan snacks and more coffee

 Salmon pasta with some salad

 Jäämari chocolate ice cream

 Pelmeni with sour cream

 Oven baked potato slices

23. June

 Coffee, chocolate cake

I baked some bread with black sesame seeds. It turned out fantastic.

Coffee, different crisps, some salad and grilled chicken. Later I had a couple of grilled sausages too.

Strawberries. Sadly, these ones didn’t have much of a taste.

We spent the Midsummer’s Eve at our friend’s place. We had a small bonfire, grilled some meat and just hung out. We got home at a semi-decent hour which was pretty remarkable for Midsummer’s Eve xD

 Valvavad lõket

Good times… 10-11. June 2017

10. June

 Coffee and three strawberry kohuke

 Magus Mull apple-lemon lemonade

Pancake with banana and chocolate syrup

Churros and cold brew coffee by Café y Churros at Tallinn Street Food Festival. So good! One churro was with dulce de leche and three with spicy cheese sauce. It was my first time trying churros, I am in love.

Crispy chicken by Gostu, Kyuho’s Kitchen. Nom!

A waffle cone with kama fluff by Vahvlihaldjad

 Bacon pizza by Street pizza

Some grapes and pastries @ Ebe’s birthday

Foodgasm! I was at work in the morning and afterwards we popped by the Tallinn Street Food Festival. My intial idea was only to get churros, but there was so much tempting food that we ended up eating a lot xD Later in the evening we went to Ebe’s birthday party, so yeah, we totally overate xD But all was fantastic.

11. June

Coffee, bacon-potato pastry and apple-cinnamon pastry that I shared with my bf

 Pancake with banana and honey

Oven baked potatoes, cutlets, some salad

Nettle marmalade. It sadly tasted mostly like sugar.

Water kimchi! I used this recipe to make it. Turned out great, however I think it needs to sour for another couple of days.

 Potato-barley curry with mayonnaise

Boyfriend was a sweetheart and came to work with me in the morning. We had coffee and pancakes ♥ After work I popped by @ Koht. Elvira treated me to some fantastic passionfruit beer.
When I got home, boyfriend had cleaned the apartment floors. Bless him! I hate vacuuming so much. We had dinner and watched “American Gods”. Good day, good day.

You better work… 17-18. April 2017

17. April

Kiwifruit-gooseberry quark and a cup of coffee

 Some ham and cheese omelette

A pancake with a banana and honey

 Spaghetti with vegan sausage-tomato sauce

The vegan sausage was weird xD But it was half off in the store, so I gave it a try. The spaghetti dinner was altogether delicious though. Does vegan sausage count as vegetables?

18. April

 Some fruit bread and coffee

A piece of omelette with sweet potato in it

My angry lunch. I had sweet potato fries, a schnitzel and a fried egg, because the chef refused to give me any soup D:

Soothing my upset of not getting any soup with a Realist ginger-peppermint lemonade. I’m in love, this lemonade was so delicious!

Spicy eggplant chili with rice and tortilla chips @ Koloniaal. This was so so so so good.

 PAI raspberry-beetroot-black currant smoothie

I worked from open until close in the café, because a co-worker fell ill, so I covered his shift, and boy was I tried when I got home. On one hand, I am thankful that there weren’t many customers, because otherwise I would have been dead, but on the other hand, it’s not good for business when there aren’t many customers. :s

Anyhow, here is a relevant blast from the past:

Café life… 23. March 2017

Coffee and Take a Bite Love snack bar (dates, cashew, cherry, cranberry, almond, sea salt, clove, cinnamon)

A pancake with mushrooms @ Koloniaal

Chickpea soup with feta cheese, cashews and seeds

Had two sausage sandwiches with the soup too

It sucks to wake up so early for work ( 6:30 D: ), but at the same time I quite enjoy the quiet mornings in the café: listening to music, sweeping the floors, lighting candles and making coffee for the trickle of sleepy people craving for their first dose of caffeine.

We also had some sourdough starter on sale in the shop, so I got a pack for myself too and made the dough in the evening. It needs to sit now for about 24 hours. We’ll see what comes out of this if anything :p

[Recipe.] Banana Bread with Raspberries

This banana bread is awesomely moist and the raspberries add a pinch of tartness to the overall sweet taste 🙂 Technically, I’ve made a version of this banana bread with and without the raspberries and one time I made it with pumpkin puree and nuts instead. So if you wish, you can leave out the raspberries or substitute them with whatever suits your fancy 🙂

Ingredients:

  • 235 g flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • Half a tsp cinnamon
  • A pinch of salt
  • 150 g sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 200 ml of olive oil
  • 3 big ripe bananas
  • 200 g of raspberries

Directions:

Shift the flour into a bowl through a sieve, add baking soda, cinnamon and salt.

Whisk the eggs and the sugar into a thick foam with a mixer. It will take about 10 minutes in a medium setting to get the proper result. Add the oil and stir it in.

Mash the bananas with a fork and add them to the egg mixture. Then, add in the flour bit by bit while mixing gently. Finally, tenderly stir in the raspberries without breaking them too much.

Set the oven to 175°C and bake for 1 hour. Keep an eye on the bread during the last 15 minutes and if you think it’s starting to brown too much, you can cover it with aluminium foil to stop it from happening. Poke the cake with a toothpick and when it comes out clean it’s ready 🙂

Let it cool before serving. Enjoy!
