Starting the year with work… 1. January 2018

Cheesecake with strawberry jam and a chocolate cake we shared with my boyfriend. We actually got them for dessert for New Year’s Eve, but we were too full for dessert xD

 Kuma kombucha and some persimmon.

Some chocolate my pen friend sent me and a cup of coffee.

 Leftover shrimp risotto.

I would say that 2017 was a pretty good year for me. It feels good to be able to say this after having quite a few crappy years before that. My mental health got better in 2017, I got to travel a bit, did many cool things like going to a muddy metal festival, spent time with my friends and loved ones, got a job and did good at it etc. I’d say it was good. I mean crap and hardship did happen, but I can mostly remember the good bits 🙂

My resolutions for last year were to attempt to produce less garbage and learn how to bake my own bread and make kimchi. I kind of failed at producing less garbage, because it’s really difficult to buy unpackaged things in Estonia unless you have whole days free to drive from store to store. However, I started recycling more, separating my garbage and dragging it to the appropriate collection sites. Not sure how much it realistically helps, but there is always hope that the trash there does in fact get recycled instead of going to some landfill.

I do try to use paper bags and reusable net bags for vegetables when possible and I try to carry my own reusable cloth bag with me when I go shopping, so I think I have managed to reduce the number of plastic bags I used.

I also switched tampons and other one time use feminine hygiene products for a menstrual cup and oh my gosh, best decision ever! Not only is it a money saver, because let’s face it, feminine hygiene products cost A LOT, but also reduced the amount of trash I sent to landfills with this small change in my life.

As for bread, I make a pretty decent yeasted white bread and my rye bread is quite decent already too. I failed at sourdough white bread several times as I couldn’t make a proper starter for it. My attempts at sourdough rye bread have been better, because Loviise gave me her starter xD Sadly the first batch she gave me went bad, as I was too busy with work and had no time to bake for a while, but now I got a new batch :p I dream of managing to keep a starter alive for years, that would be awesome.

Now kimchi… I made water kimchi once that turned out nicely, but that’s about it.

This year, my resolutions are:

    • Work on my art and handicraft business.
    • Try to accept and make peace with the person that I am, instead of unrealistically hoping to burst out of my skin as a completely new “better” person one day.

Sounds good, no?

Meh and Movies and Bill Bailey… 30. September – 2. October 2016

30. September

 Buckwheat cereal with milk.

 Macaroni with wakame.

Mulk’s porridge, a fried egg, soy sauce marinated chicken bits, some salad and marinated cucumber.

1. October

 Coffee and an apple.

 French fries.

Tomato soup with sour cream and a slice of bread with liver paté.

I also had two beers in the evening. Miss K visited and we watched a couple of movies. The first one was “Alice Through the Looking Glass” which was somewhat meh, but it had its cool bits, so I am not complaining too much. I really loved the character of Time in it, he was great. Not sure why, but the Mad Hatter felt so out of place in this movie, I didn’t have this problem with him in the first one.

The second movie was “Guardians of the Galaxy,” because I wanted to see it again. Such an awesome movie still. One of the reasons why I wanted to watch it again is that I’ve been having dreams about Chris Pratt recently xD So worth it in its fabulous dance off glory!

2. October

 Coffee and some tomato soup.

Some pancakes with strawberry jam and another cup of coffee.

Boiled pelmeni with sour cream and a cup of bouillon.

We went to see Bill Bailey’s “Limboland” show in the evening. He was absolutely hilarious! His musical jokes were the best in my opinion. I had a great time and I laughed so much that my hear hurt a bit afterwards xD

Here is an example of what mister Bailey entertained us with:

It’s not the exact same performance he did yesterday, but similar 🙂

In Tukums, Latvia… 3. July 2016

Banana-mango-pineapple-passion fruit yoghurt smoothie that tasted way too much like mango for me to like it.

Some potato salad at my grandparent’s place

And some pancakes with strawberry jam

 More potato salad

A “risotto” that I only ate a couple bites of. It tasted awful.

 Some cherries

 Yummy solyanka soup

Chamomile tea and a sandwich with avocado and roast beef

Mežpils unfiltered beer. Didn’t enjoy it very much.

I drove with my mom and my little brother to Tukums city in Latvia. My brother had an ice skating camp there and we decided to tag along with my mom, to camp out in a local camping place and see some sights while there. The camping place was… well let’s say there was a lot of false advertisement. The place was pretty dirty and almost none of the things, that we were promised, weren’t actually existing. For instance, there was supposed to be a kitchen area where one could cook breakfast, but that turned out to be a table with an electric kettle and three coffee mugs. Good thing I had brought along my tiny gas stove and some pots so we could cook if we wanted to. There was also no wifi, which was kind of important to us, because mobile data costs a lot abroad and we needed internet for GPS and for looking up things to do and places to go etc.

The camping huts themselves were pretty regular, but the mattresses were super old and felt as if they were made of straw… it felt like sleeping on very lumpy stone ground. My mom has back problems, so that wasn’t too good for her health really. Also we were promised that there would be clean bed sheets etc… but well there were none of those, so I ended up buying a pillow cover and a big blanket cover to sleep under. I wanted to buy a bed sheet actually, because I needs some new ones at home anyway, but turns out Latvians don’t really use the kinds of bed sheets we do in Estonia. Their bed sheets are made of terry cloth and have rubber bands sown in to the sides to pull them over the mattress. Our bed sheets are usually a sheet of linen or other comfly cloth.

The toilet was an outdoor one, which would have been okay, but boy was it filthy and old. It was perched on the side of hill and was kind of leaning backwards. The floorboards had rotted through, so the owners had covered them with a thin plywood plate. Every time I had to use the toilet, I truly hoped I wouldn’t fall through the floor :s I mean we knew the camping place would be pretty basic and nothing luxurious, and we were fine with that, but at least we expected it to be clean and livable, not falling apart and super uncomfortable for a good nights sleep.

The entire campsite had the eerie feeling of a horror movie setting really xD It didn’t help much that we were completely alone there with just the owners dog, Eero, to keep us company. It also didn’t help matters that it was almost constantly raining 😦 I had planned to stay there for 4 days and my mom had hoped to stay for two weeks, but it became clear quickly enough that none of that was going to happen. Mostly because my mom’s back wouldn’t have survived the bed and she really didn’t want to be all alone in a place like that. We however decided to stay for a couple of nights and see if the weather and things would improve, so it wouldn’t have been a completely wasted drive.

Some photo evidence of the place we stayed at:

The “reliably clean” looking bed sheets and the awful mattress.

The amazing outhouse

It was scary stepping on this

I mean, yikes!
